“There’s no way [President Bush is] going to take military action in Iran. Iran is, is three times as big geographically, there’s 58 million people vs. 26 million people in, in Iraq, and, and there’s no way. A fanatical government — I mean, the, the president of the United States does not have a military option. He can say he has a military option; he does not have a military option.” —Jack Murtha, 3/19/06

But as with anything, in the last six years it doesn’t matter what the reality is on the ground.  What matters is the reality between Bush’s ears. It’s not as if I have any great ideas about how to handle the
situation, as if it mattered if I did. But regarding Iran I have one paramount policy objective: Keep Bush away from it.  I don’t like the idea of Iran with a nuclear weapon any more than anyone else, but the last person on earth I want to deal with the problem is George Bush and his gang.  Somebody has to take the keys to the car away from this guy before he drives us all off a cliff.

That’s why I like the idea of impeachment.  I don’t care if it succeeds or not.  I’m for anything that will tie this guy’s hands and prevent him from doing more harm. If it does succeed and Cheney becomes president, then impeach him, and then Hastert.  I know it sounds stupid, but I’m sick of hearing about all the practical political reasons impeachment is not a good political strategy for the Democrats.

I don’t care about the Democrats or their future; I only care about the development of some kind of robust resistance to what the Bush administration is jamming down our throats.  I want the Democrats to win in November because there has to be some kind of counterbalance to GOP dominance of the political process.  If they do win, they should immediately slap Bush with impeachment.   We Americans, because of our stupidity, may have elected this  guy twice and so deserve  him, but the rest of the world doesn’t.

But in all liklihood it will have been too late. We will have attacked
Iran by November.  It will be important to do before the
elections to throw us all into a "we-must-support-the-president-no-matter-what mode, so don’t do anything to undermine his authority.  We fell for it in ’04. Why shouldn’t we fall for it in ’06?
