Coming back to the class warfare issue: my working theory is that wealthy individuals bought themselves a radical right party, believing — correctly — that it would cut their taxes and remove regulations, but failed to realize that eventually the craziness would take on a life of its own, and that the monster they created would turn on its creators as well as the little people.

And nobody knows how it ends. (Source)

We're seeing the dark side of democracy come into the light. These redemptive reactionaries cannot be held morally accountable for reasons of insanity and terminal delusion. They are for the most part frightened ignoramuses with the emotional maturity and pack mentality of the middle schoolers in the Lord of the Flies.

The culpability lies instead with Boehner. He gives the impression of wanting to jump in front of the crazy parade rather than of making any attempt to disperse it. Surely he must realize that he cannot lead it and that he will be run over by it.

Maybe he's more complicated than that. Maybe he's trying to find a way to do the right thing and to limit the damage behind the scenes. I don't know, but I hope he's thinking of history's judgment of him in the long term, and not just of his need to do what it takes to survive in the short term.
